For those among us with hidden disabilities as anxiety, dementia or autism air-travel can be an ordeal. As if air travel isn’t stressful enough, the hurly-burly of the terminals; the queues to check-in and pass security checks then Departure Lounge and the scramble to get to the right gate when the flight is finally called all add up. If only something could be done to help!
Well, someone at Heathrow Airport has been listening and have come up with an innovation that sends a subtle, clear signal to staff indicating passengers that may need just a little more patience, care, attention and support. The system is called the Sunflower Disability Lanyard – Sunflower Lanyard for short – and is now available to all travellers with hidden disabilities passing through any of Heathrow’s five terminals.
The Sunflower Lanyard
The Sunflower Lanyard is a simple discreet item that will enable Heathrow staff to see that you have an invisible disability without the need for you to declare it. You can, therefore, travel independently through the airport safe in the knowledge that if you need any additional support or assistance during your journey, Airport staff are trained to recognise and assist those indicating they may be in particular need of assistance simply and easily. Wearing the Sunflower Lanyard passengers in need are easier to spot and assist thus making their passage through the Airport so much less daunting and stressful.
How can I get my Sunflower Lanyard?
If you are travelling through Heathrow within the next six months, Heathrow Airport would be happy to post you a lanyard wherever you are in the world. To allow time to process your request and post your lanyard/s, please allow 4 working days if you are based in the UK and 7 working days if you are based outside the UK.
Email us at special_assistance@heathrow.com and be sure to include all the following information:
- Full name (including surnames)
- Departing / Connecting or Arriving terminal
- Flight number(s)
- Postal address where your lanyard will be delivered
