Meditation and mindfulness are hot subjects right now. And a lot of us have already downloaded an app or two on either habit in the hope of improving our lives. But in all honesty, meditation still wasn’t ‘clicking’ with me until I found TM.

Transcendental Meditation is familiar to some through its connection with George Harrison who dragged the Beatles abroad to learn it, but to a younger generation, this form of meditation is now attracting a very different audience. What do Ellen, Oprah, David Lynch and Russel Brand all have in common? Transcendental meditation! Oprah was such a fan, she paid for all of her staff to learn it. But it’s not just actions and celebrities who are TM-ing. Transcendental meditators are all around us, sitting on trains with their eyes closed, or next to you on a bus. TM is portable and practical for any lifestyle, but first, you have to learn about it from an instructor. This is one of the few remaining art forms you can’t download to your media device.

I found out about TM due to the fact I read the recently deceased DJ’s, Avicci, who sadly killed himself last year, was in the process of researching and learning about TM before his death. Something I read online while researching him for a project.

I hadn’t heard of Transcendental Mediation before and when I started to search for information on it, noticed an astounding number of well-known personalities including actors and writers were practicers of this form of mediation. It soon became apparent that the only way to learn TM was to attend a course, and so one sunny warm day in July I asked my mother to drive me to a house in Guildford where I met Pam and Ric, who were the local TM teachers. I had been too fatigued to drive that day and had only really taken my mother as a sanity checker in case I was swept along with a sale pitch if one occurred. What I didn’t realise was that when we were shown a video of how TM could improve one’s life it would be my mother who was the first to speak after it ended, and says how impressed she was to hear of its benefits.

There is much writing on the internet about Transcendental Meditation, and I will allow you to do your own research on that, but in short here are some key facts which were given in answer to my questions to Pam and Ric.

The noticeable ways it has changed my life is that it has given me an inner state of calm and contentment. I have also had good health and happiness in my life.

The idea is that by practising TM for twenty minutes a day is that in the same way you need to recharge your phone, twenty minutes twice a day is a way to rest the body and the mind and allow your blood flow to slow and your body to take some time out. Twenty minutes twice a day at first seems a huge amount of time to be taken out of our busy lives, but if you see it as a chance to regain some perspective on your life and projects it really is a no-brainer.

Since starting TM I feel more open to creative ideas and problem-solving. I feel calmer and less likely to get angry or upset so quickly. I would even go so far as to say I think my anxiety and depression may have been reduced. It’s not a quick fix to life’s stresses and problems but it unquestionably has been shown through numerous scientific studies to have beneficial benefits to health.
