I must preface this review by saying that so far in my reviewing nothing has tasted like alcoholic wine, but with today’s offering, I think we come quite close. The other important thing to note is that Muscat does taste like grape juice, I’m not saying that there aren’t other flavours on the palate, but this needs to be noted before you all start nagging me that you could just taste grape juice.

Yes, you could, but where this wine delivers is in its experience. There is more happening in the glass, an added dimension far greater than grape juice and delivers from the nose to the tongue, so before you dismiss it off the cuff, to give it a chance.

Ladies and gentleman, please let me present to you, a pale to light golden yellow, medium dry, acidic wine with citrus notes and an aromatic bouquet. Yes, the 2017 Muscat is a grown-up, refined, complex wine delivering both on the nose and the palate.
The 2017 Muscat by Torres is not what I was expecting. At £5.99 from Waitrose, despite being today’s ‘Buyers Choice’, I was sure somewhere back in the recesses of my wine tasting experiences I have not great Muscat experiences. So, it was trepidation I chilled the Muscat down and then poured myself a glass.

Muscat is generally very aromatic with soft fruit, and some of both remain in this very appetising drink. 2017 gives Torres a good two years for this wine to have developed its sensibilities so I was vaguely optimistic, but it wasn’t until I took a whiff of the nose my interest piqued. This is not an overly sweet wine impersonating non-alcoholic wine on the bouquet. I picked up the green apple, pear, a hint of vanilla, a touch of hay and the suggestion of floral notes which the internet has helpfully enlightened me to be aware of and took a sip. The nose is undoubtedly a little sweet but the palate is a far more complex affair. Vanilla and fresh fruit come together in a wine which is medium bodied and a good finish.

This is a delightfully grown-up addition to the non-alcoholic wine world and I do think that it’s critics have been overly harsh. Chill it right down, and drink it as an aperitif or serve with white meat, fish or salad. If you aren’t sure after your first glass, try a second. Like so many of this breed of non-alcoholic wines, sometimes, as in life there needs to be a period of adjustment. Before you love it.
