How clean is your water? – I honestly, didn’t know. Then I did some googling
“ZeroWater’s range of Water Filter Jugs are the only water filters that remove over 99% of dissolved solids from your water with our 5 stage filtration system”
So says ZeroWaters blurb on their website, and as someone who is increasingly concerned about what is in my water, I was desperate to see if water that had been through a five-stage filtration would display any marked differences from what came out of the tap. “Dissolved solids” – what on earth were they? I wasn’t sure, but what I did know was that the more I read, the more I learn, the more I want to improve everything that is entering my body. And why shouldn’t water be at the top of the list?
To find out if Zerowater was different, and would change my life, (yes, no half measures for me) I test ‘drunk’ a jug for two months and this is what I realised.
- Zerowater tastes AMAZING!
You won’t know your water doesn’t taste good until you try Zerowater and then compare the two! I have grown up with tap water, and ‘other filter water jugs’ and it was fine. Water was ‘water’, but to be honest. I wasn’t hugely keen, I definitely wasn’t excited about water. Then I tried Zerowater.
In one glass, my mind was blown. What you don’t realise until you drink water which has been filtered, five times is exactly water can taste like. It can taste like nothing. Like what you would imagine ‘pure’ untampered or chemical treated water might taste like.
- 99% of contaminants found in tap water are removed in Zerowater.
Do you know what is in your water? If you are really interested at the end of this blog post I will tell you, but in short, unless you are incredibly scrupulous there is a lot you may not know about. We take water for granted. It’s with us the minute we turn on a tap, but how many of us actually think about what might be getting into our water without us even knowing? The answer? A lot. But just because we don’t know about them, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t care. It’s only once you start drinking Zerowater, and you start testing the tap water in comparison with Zerowater with the electronic water testing device will you see the evidence for what you are tasting.
How does Zerowater filter water?
Stage One: Removes suspended solids such as dust and rust that make your water appear cloudy.
Stage Two: Foam Distributor: This removes additional suspended solids.
Stage Three: Multi-layered activated carbon – and oxidation reduction alloy. Removes organic contaminants; pesticides, herbicides, Mercury, Chlorine, Chloramine, and stops bacteria growing.
Stage 4: Dual comprehensive ion exchange resin. Removes inorganic compounds i.e. metals, non-metals, and radiological components.
Stage 5: Ultra-fine screen & non-woven membrane layers. This removes remaining suspended solids and holds the resin in place.
Do you know what is in your tap water?
According to the Open College website there over 330 identified man-made chemicals detected in UK tap water to date in 2016. Water companies only test for around 20 of these known chemicals! These twenty chemicals are all present in varying amounts in the water we may drink daily and may include, for example DDT, Simazine, Atrazine, and 3,4 Benz Pyrene, (weed killers). If you don’t recognise some of those, don’t worry, neither did I!
But, let’s be frank, just from their names, don’t you get the decidedly obvious impression they shouldn’t be entering our bodies?
So how does Zero Water Filter Water Jugs work?
- ZeroWater’s first layer of filtration activated carbon and oxidation reduction alloy removes the chlorine taste you are accustom to with tap water.
- The Ion Exchange stage removes virtually all dissolved solids that may be leftover from public water systems or even leached into your water from piping such as Aluminum, Lead, Zinc, Nitrate and more.
- Three additional stages are included to remove other contaminants and to ensure your water receives the appropriate amount of treatment time to deliver a “000” reading on your water quality meter.
The FDA requires the TDS level in PURIFIED bottled water to reach 000-010ppm. ZeroWater is the only filter in its class to achieve this level.
The amount of chemicals that are used to kill bacteria’s and other nasty microorganisms in tap water is large.
Some of these chemicals alongside Flouride are
- Liquified chlorine
- Sodium silicofluoride
- Aluminium sulphate
- Fluorosilicic acid
- Calcium hydroxide
Do you know what these chemicals are? I know I didn’t. But the reality is – do you want anything in your water at all? Maybe a few things to kill the nasties, but other than that? I’m probably a bit twee, but I hark back to the days one could fill a water bottle from a stream. Yes, that was never me! But isn’t it a charming thought?
Once water leaves the treatment plant we have no idea what pipes it might pass through on its way to us, and with anyone with a house older than 1970, there could be lead pipes on it’s the route to our tap. There have been studies that show that levels of Benzotrialozol and Tolytriazole which are chemicals found in dishwasher tablets had been discovered in the water on route into our homes. High levels of the female hormone estrogen have also been revealed, contaminate water supplies as it returns to our waterways from the millions of women on the contraceptive pill or HRT (hormone replacement therapy). As estrogen is not filtered out on a large scale anyone drinking water straight from the tap without a water filtration system is, in essence, consuming small quantities of the estrogen hormone!
One of the biggest issues currently being researched around the estrogen levels in tap water is it’s linked to male fertility problems, it is thought the levels of estrogen found in tap water lead to testicular dysgenesis syndrome and fertility issues! The Environment Agency also recently revealed research showing large quantities of male fish in rivers and waterways are actually changing sex – all because of the high estrogen levels being found in water. High levels of estrogen in women can lead to fat storage around the butt and thighs too!
Next up comes fluoride.
Fluoride is added to around 10% of the UK’s water supply, its purpose is to help prevent dental decay, however, the problem with adding fluoride to water in my opinion greatly out way the benefits. The thyroid gland is particularly affected by fluoride exposure because its store of iodine is depleted. Lack of iodine depresses the thyroid’s metabolic and immune functions by shutting down the production of thyroxine, the thyroid prohormone that controls metabolism resulting in hypothyroidism and lowered immunity. The resulting hypothyroidism causes weight gain, cold intolerance, dry and prematurely aged skin, depression, constipation, hair loss, memory loss, irritability, increased cholesterol levels, heart disease and loss of libido. Pretty scary stuff yeh?
Isn’t it any wonder the fluoridation of water is banned in all other European countries? …just saying!
And finally…
Research by Birmingham University showed that the “chlorination” process that tap water goes through to kill germs and dangerous bacteria could be a problem for pregnant women.
Researchers found that chemicals formed during chlorination called trihalomethanes, or THM for short were found to affect pregnant women more and cause a higher incidence of three birth defects (hole-in-the-heart defect, cleft palate or anencephalus) very scary stuff!
The chemicals found in our water are used to make it ‘safe’ to drink as water naturally contains bacteria, but as someone on immune suppressants with a weakened immune system, I am becoming more and more aware of the chemicals that are creeping into our diet without us noticing.
For that reason with a holiday planned to America where there is a scarily high number of people sick with autoimmune diseases, I wanted to try and find a water bottle that would filter out as many nasties as I could.
First up in my search results came two companies, Zerowater, and Doulton Water. I wanted to compare their water filter processes alongside tap water and rainwater.
Zerowater kindly provided me with a bottle but Doulton Water ignored all three of my emails. In the end, with the aim of a fair comparison, I ordered one of their water bottles to try. Unfortunately due to the nature of the design, it was very hard to get water to pass through it. However, I eventually did and these are the results I obtained.

What is important to note though, is the fact that due to the difficulty in getting water out of the Doulton bottle I had to squeeze it and I now wonder if that dislodges any of the filtration granules. I will be approaching Doulton to ask them about this as this funding appears odd.
In conclusion, it is my personal belief that a lot of tap water has an odd and not entirely pleasant mouth taste and this combined with my water clarity results suggest that the chemicals being used to keep our water clean may, in fact, be affecting the purity of what we receive at the tap end. In an ideal world all water would in my opinion be 000, however it is of course important to keep people healthy. Perhaps in the future water companies may become more open to disclosing their water cleaning processes. Until that point. I’ve made my decision. ZeroWater all the way!
